Teen Patti Movie Review

With a stellar cast, does the Teen Patti movie do justice to the popular card game or does it fold under pressure? Read my review to find out.

If there is one card game that you bet most Indians know and have played at least once in their lifetime then it would be Teen Patti. This game is played in the biggest casinos with huge bets and also on local streets with mere pennies. It is also popular among family members during Diwali where people of all ages spend their evening playing Teen Patti. Even Bollywood was enthralled by the game and made the movie “Teen Patti” in 2010.

In this article, I will share my thoughts on the Teen Patti movie. I will be covering the movie’s story line, the cast and crew associated, and how the actual game was featured in the teen patti movie.

Teen Patti Movie | Creative and Production Team

Teen Patti movie is produced by Ambika Hinduja and directed by Leena Yadav. The screenplay is written by Leena Yadav and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam. It was produced on a budget of 45 crores and was released on 26th February 2010. The music director for the movie is Salim-Sulaiman.

The story revolves around a college professor, Venkat Subramaniam played by Amitabh Bacchan who is a Mathematics genius but unappreciated and often humiliated in his college. He is narrating this story to his friend and fellow mathematician Perci Trachtenberg played by Sir Ben Kingsley who had called him to London to participate in a casino game. Professor Venkat has developed a new theory that can change the equation of mathematics forever. But when he submits his theory to the college it is rejected.

To prove his theory Venkat first plays the Teen Patti game on the internet and succeeds. He then speaks with his colleague, a young professor Shantanu Biswa played by R Madhavan who convinces him to try the theory in a real-world scenario. They assemble four students and go to the underground gambling dens of Mumbai where they successfully test it. Soon they get greedy for money and start playing bigger games with higher stakes. The greed slowly changes everyone and soon they become reckless, jealous, and even start betraying each other

The entire movie revolves around the poker game Teen Patti. The theory professor develops is that if he gets to know which cards are held by one of the players ( apart from him) then he can guess the cards held by all other players.

We get to see the Teen Patti game in its raw form in the gambling dens run by gangsters and later see the same game being played in the biggest casinos in India. The Teen Patti games in action are shot brilliantly showing the uncertainty and giving the audience a sneak peek into the game.

It is also thrilling to watch how the professor and his team crack the code. I am sure a lot of moviegoers who have never played the  game will get a basic understanding of it by watching this movie.

The movie has some of the biggest names from both Bollywood and Hollywood. Amitabh Bachchan as the professor plays his part very well as does Sir Ben Kinglsey, the mathematics professor from England. All the other actors like R Madhavan, Shraddha Kapoor have played their part up to the mark. The story though is not too compelling and after sometime feels repetitive and boring. The cinematography, especially during the game play looks modern and slick.

Overall, I would say that the Teen Patti movie is a an okayish movie to watch. Yes, the cast is stellar but the storyline as mentioned earlier can get a bit repetitive. The good news is that the actual card game is incorporated well into the movie (it would be extremely disappointing if the director had not manage to do that!)

The Teen Patti movie does a decent job of boosting the profile of an already popular card game in India. You will also find a list of online casinos that have made the game available for their players.
